In traditional psychiatry, the goal is to treat mental disorders such as major depressive disorder or generalized anxiety disorder (as classified by the Diagnostic& Statistical Manual(DSM) of mental disorders.) Historically, the psychiatrist tries to suppress the symptoms which a patient presents with. The tools used are primarily psychiatric medications and some psychotherapy.
By contrast, in Integrative Psychiatry, we believe these so-called disorders are merely symptoms pointing toward imbalances that cause mental illness. Therefore the goal is to strive to find the root causes of these symptoms. As such, we use extensive laboratory testing which is not done at all (or done very minimally ) in traditional psychiatry. In our search for root causes, we look at gutbrain axis, metabolic regulation, immune modulation, brain optimization & detoxification pathways. We also examine an individual's history of trauma, beliefs & spirituality. In addition, we focus extensively on life style issues such as sleep, habits, nutrition, physical activity &relationships. In integrative psychiatry we make extensive use of supplements and nutraceuticals that are backed by research and evidence. In addition, we use psychotherapy tailored to the needs of the individual. We will not however shy away from using standard psychiatric medications, when and if needed. Therefore, the spotlight is on the individual affected by mental illness rather than on the "disorder". If you approach us for help, you are in fact entering a partnership with us :a partnership to explore and to find answers & ultimately not just to recover but to grow & transcend.
